Almost everyone is familiar with the tune "Ode to Joy".  This comes from one of Beethoven's most well-known works, Symphony #9.  Not only is it considered his most notable composition, but it was also the last Symphony he ever completed.  One thing that most people don't realize is that, before he wrote the 9th Symphony he composed another piece by the title of "Choral Fantasy in C Minor" - for piano, orchestra & choir.  This piece is often considered the trial run before he composed the 9th because it hints frequently at aspects of the 9th Symphony.
